What is the story behind Emporia State University having a bell tower called Silent Joe?

Legend has it that back in the day Emporia was expecting to have an awesome undefeated football team and the tradition has been to always ring the bell after a victory. They predected a blow-out season and told people to start donating money to buy a new bell because the current one would be busted by mid-season. They ended up losing every game that season and the bell was nick-named "Silent Joe" as a result.
They still ring the bell after each win and this last season they had a great season and we expect more great seasons from here on out.
