If the bottle is from France, a Chablis is made of 100% chardonnay grapes grown from the Chablis region.

If the bottle is from the USA, a Chardonnay must have at least 80% chardonnay grapes grown from anywhere.

If the bottle says Chablis and is from the US, all bets are off. It could have nearly anything inside. Many US bottlers in the 1970's started using the term "Chablis" to mean "white wine."

There is no difference Chablis is made from the Chardonnay grape variety but gets its name from the region it was produced from.

Because New World wines have made popular the naming of wines after the variety of GRAPE from which they are made, the practice of naming wines after the PLACE they are made is becoming less popular.

A French friend asked to have a bottle of Chardonnay brought to him from California because he believed incorrectly that he couldn't buy any produced in France. It's this sort of confusion that varietal naming eliminates.

Chardonnay is white and pinot is red. There are many other differences, but that is the main one.

There are other varietals-pinot blanc, pinot meunier, pinot gris, and pinot grigio, pinot bianco, etc. which are all white varietals as well.

pinot noir and pinotage are red.

Is Australian chardonnay the same as chablis?

Almost certainly not. French chablis must contain chardonnay grapes from the chablis region. US chardonnay must contain 80% chardonnay grapes from anywhere. Any other civilized country's chardonnay usually does contain at least some chardonnay. Any 'chablis' from anywhere else can, and usually does, contain any kind of grape or any fruit juice from anywhere on the planet. Some winemakers now use the word 'chablis' to mean 'white wine'.
