It depends on your body temperature and homeostasis (your bodys way of maintaining internal conditions)
In case of ordinary thermometer if the thermometer is taken out the body whose temperature has been seen, the Mercury would fall down as the bulb gets cooled. But in case of clinical thermometer even after the thermometer has been taken out of the mouth of the patient the level of mercury would be held at the same level though the bulb falls to the room temperature. So doctor could see the temperature liesurely. To bring back the mercury to lowest level we have to give jerks to the thermometer by shaking it.
A small amount of water-based lubricant is placed on the colored tip of the thermometer to make it easier to insert. The tip of the thermometer is inserted into the rectum no more than 0.5 in (1.3 cm) and held there for two to three minutes.
The temperature referred to as 1800, is the motion energyof the particles there. If you held a thermometer up, it would NOT register that 1800 temperature. At 1800 oC a human would be vaporised.
A half minute short bulbed clinical thermometer is necessary. See that the mercury is completely shaken down to 9O°F or so.The bulb of the thermometer should be lightly greased with Vaseline then gently inserted into the rectum at about two inches. An agitated dog can be held by an assistant.Keep the instrument in position for a full minute, remove, wipe with cotton wool dipped in antiseptic, and look at the level.
Hand Held Products was created in 1999.

This can be bulb thermometer. When the bulb is held in the hand the liquid warms, expands, and rises up the tube. It can also be a novelty such as the "drinking bird". When the bulb on the bottom is held in the hand, the liquid expands and rises up the tube to the head making it heavier so the bird tilts down. It's possibly a variation of a lava lamp. The fluid in the lava lamp was heated by the bulb on bottom and rose to the top where it cooled and fell again. There may have been a hand held variation that worked on the heat of your hand.
Originally by hand, then by hand held machines.
