Well a groundstroke is when you hit the ball at the baseline. You know, forehand and backhand. The volley is close up to the net, where you basically block the ball coming at you with your tennis raquet facing straight up. There is a forehand volley ( hold with right hand) and a backhand volley ( hold with left)-- Left handed people--It's just the opposite.
The longest countinuous volley ever recorded during a professional tennis competition was 26 minutes and 13 seconds. The record was set during a match in the preliminary rounds of the U.S. Open. The match was between Mark Keller and Sven Johanssen. Mark Keller would eventually win the match but was eliminated in the next round.
Serve, Forehand,Backhand, (Forehand)volley, (Backhand) volley, smash, (Backhand) slice. Two handed Backhand, one handed Backhand. And i think there is a Backhanded smash i thought i heard my tennis coach say that. Oh and there is a difference between a top spin forehand and just like a swing forehand which is like back then hit ect. ;)

So, very simply, a volley is when a player hits the ball before it bounces on his side of the table. This is not allowed.
