This poem is about the Vietnam Memorial and is taken from Komunyakaa's book Dien Cai Dau (1988). The speaker is visiting the Vietnam Memorial and the names listed, all 58,022 of them, lift off the granite wall and appear in images of their death. It is a subtle poem honoring the dead and their sacrifices during war. This poem is successful because it is without doctrine or opinion on whether the sacrifices are just, but rather they are fact.
