"The Pit and the Pendulum" was a horror story written by Edgar Allan Poe. The most important events of the story occur when the protagonist finds himself in an Inquisition prison, and is subjected to a variety of terrifying near death experiences. Just as he is about to die, the protagonist is rescued by French troops who have come to liberate the prison.
The story is open to interpretation, but a common view is this. The pit represents hell or death, because it is a frightening, unknown concept to the narrator. The pendulum represents time. It swings like a clock pendulum, which shows the seconds until the next minute. Each swing for this bladed pendulum means one step closer to death. The rats (although commonly viewed as vulgar, unwanted creatures, which is what the narrator thinks at first)…
