The clock timer on your immersion heater is for you to program the heater to run at certain temperatures at certain times. You can contact your utility company and ask what the off peak or low demand hours are. Those times it is less costly to run your heater.

How is an electric heater hot water heater turned on?

There is a thermostat inside an accessible panel on the hot water heater. The panel is typically secured by two screws. When the temperature goes below the set level the heater turns on. You'll either see a specific temperature or just an adjustment that says hotter. Some installations have an external timer that might turn off the hot water heater between midnight and 5AM, for example.

Is it cheaper to turn the immersion heater on and off or to leave it on all the time if you have economy 7 electricity 3 till 7 in the morning and 1.30 till 4.30 in the afternoon?

Maybe. There are too many variables. Lag your tank well. If you search your question on google you will see every possible answer. The only way is to monitor your own electric meter whilst performing varied experiments at different times of year. Average a week of always on and a week of on when you need it. Set a timer for the E7 and see if that makes a difference.

Why is a timer is used in an electrical circuit?

Timer relays are used in control circuitry. There are two main types, an (off delay) and an (on delay). If you want one device to turn off before the timer controlled device then you would use an off delay timer. If you want one device to turn on before the timer controlled device then you would use an on delay timer. When the timer is energized this starts the timer circuit in the relay to time out.
