The towing capacity for any vehicle should be posted on a tag in the driver's door frame. This is called the build tag and it will have information on it like the VIN of the vehicle, recommended tire size, etc. Be aware that this sticker reflects the tow capacity of the vehicle as it left the factor…y. Most F-250's came from the factory with tow ratings between 9,000 and 16,000 pounds. The 1986 F-250 that I own is rated for 9600 lbs. A 2010 F-250 with similar equipment is rated at 16,100 lbs. If this sticker is missing, or equipment has been added to enhance towing capacity, then you can make some educated guesses about the vehicle's current towing capacity. A vehicle's ability to tow a trailer is governed by what it can safely stop, not what it can get moving. A Honda Civic is capable of moving some really hefty trailers, but it cannot stop them once they are moving. This comes down to mass and brakes. As a rule, the tow vehicle should weigh AT LEAST 75% of whatever you are towing. So if your tow vehicle weighs in at 6,000 lbs, then the trailer and cargo should not weigh more than about 8,000 lbs.
