The transfer of electrons is the movement of electrons from one atom to another atom. The atom that loses electrons becomes a positively charged ion, and the atom that gains electrons becomes a negatively charged ion. An electrostatic bond occurs between the oppositely charged ions, and this is called an ionic bond.

A transfer of electrons occurs when two atoms chemically bond together.

Depending on the two elements bonding, each atom will lose or gain electrons based upon their ion charge (shown in the top right corner in standard notation).

For example, an element with an ion charge of 2+ will lose two electrons when it bonds; electrons are negatively charged, therefore losing electrons yields a positive atom (more protons than electrons).

Why do you keep giving electric shocks to people who you touch?

When you move in dry areas you knock off electrons and change your charge. If you knock off electrons then you go positive. If you gain electrons you go negative. When you touch something or someone that is grounded then the balance of electrons occurs. The transfer of the electrons quickly causes the shock.
