Translucent
Translucent is given when objects are vague and hard to see through the emerald. Light can pass through, but it is somewhat diffused.
Semi-translucent
Semi-translucent or or semi-opaque is given when a small fraction of light can pass through the emerald, mainly around the edges.
Opaque
For opaque emeralds, virtually no light passes through the stone.
The transparency of an emerald is transparent (able to transmit light through) to translucent (able to transmit light but not fully).
Like all gemstones, emeralds are graded according to colour, clarity, cut and crystal. The latter refers to its transparency and a high grade emerald would have a pure verdant green hue and a high degree of transparency. The US Federal Trade Commission requires the disclosure of any oiling treatment that an emerald has undergone and anyone considering purchasing an expensive emerald should request a treatment report from a reputable gemological laboratory.
