An electronic bistable flip flop is a memory circuit element that can store a binary logic state either 1or 0. They are used in vast numbers in calculators and microprocessors to create and store binary numbers in arithmetic operations. These calculations underpin every aspect of computing from gaming to supermarket card transactions.

The simplest flip flop consists of two cross coupled transistors wired in such a way that once triggered by an incoming logic signal the circuit remembers that it has been SET. Having STORED this logic 1 it is later READ to form the data of a calculation and then RESET to 0 when no longer required.
