A British 1797 copper "cartwheel" Penny (George III)(36 mm diameter, 10 leaves in wreath)(aka a "Cartwheel coin" or "Soho Penny"), uncirculated and in absolute mint condition could fetch up to £1,000 GBP. If it has been circulated but still in good condition, it might fetch anything from £12 to £300 GBP.

A British 1797 copper "cartwheel" Penny (George III)(aka a "Cartwheel coin" or "Soho Penny")(11 leaves in wreath), uncirculated and in absolute mint condition could fetch up to £1,250 GBP. If it has been circulated but still in good condition, it might fetch anything from £15 to £350 GBP.

NOTE - The reverse of these coins is upside down to the obverse. This is normal.

The values quoted are the best possible for the best specimens in their grades, but may be significantly lower due to varying demand for the coin and the prevailing economic climate. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.

There were no British Pennies minted in 1790. Pennies of this period would have been silver had they been minted.

Due to Britains ongoing expenses with various wars in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, there were very few silver or copper coins minted, subsequently there were a great many counterfeit coins produced.

Large halfpence and farthings of the 18th century are often thought of as pennies as they had no indication of value, but even so, no copper coins were issued dated 1790.

Additional information

Mathew Boulton, James Watts business partner, operated a mint in Soho that minted tokens. Boulton did this to give poor people honest money, worth nearly their weight in copper and difficult to counterfeit because of Boulton's design.

The UK government eventually gave Boulton a contract to mint some coins. See eBay and search Coins and Paper Money>UK> and use Wilkinson or Soho in search.
