Assuming the coin is circulated, the 1858 Sm Letters Flying Eagle cent is not rare or scarce. For an accurate assessment of value the coin needs to be seen and graded. In general retail values for low grade coins are $20.00-$50.00, better grade are $60.00-$165.00 and coins showing almost no wear run from $200.00-$345.00. Values are a market average and only for coins in collectible condition, coins that are bent, corroded, scratched, used as jewelery or have been cleaned have far less value if any to a collector or dealer.

Look at the coins again. No Flying Eagle cents are dated 1886 or 1909. They were only struck from 1856 to 1858.
The value of a 1858 Flying Eagle cent depends on the grade of the coin and which type (small or large letters) for that year the coins is. But retail values are $25.00-$325.00 for circulated coins so I suggest having a dealer or collector grade it for a more accurate value

There isn't a flying eagle $2.50 gold piece. All coins of that denomination struck from 1908 to 1929 show an eagle with its wings folded and perched on a bundle of arrows. There's more information about 1911 quarter-eagles at the Related Question.
For an accurate assessment of value the coin needs to be seen and graded. Two types exist for this coin, a large letter and a small letter and the values are a little different. Take it to a coin dealer.

The "Heraldic Eagle" reverse was first used in 1798. An authentic 1797 DB dollar should have the "Small Eagle" reverse.
6-5-11>>> Assuming the coin is a 1857 Flying Eagle cent that has not been cleaned and in circulated condition, retail value for a low grade coin should be at least $25.00. I do suggest showing it to a dealer or collector for grading.
