Cents from the 1950s are common and only worth 3 to 5 cents.

The only exception is a 1955 coin that shows clear doubling of the date and motto, kind of like a "ghost" image. This error can retail for $1000-1500.

How much is a penny with a D on it worth?

It depends on the year and condition of the penny. If it is from any time in the 1950s or later, it is most likely worth nothing to collectors - so it is worth face value (1 cent). All the D means is that is is made in the Denver mint.
