1964 and earlier dimes are 90% silver. In average condition their retail value is about 0.07 X the current price of silver; a metal dealer will pay less.

Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter next to the base of the torch. It may be blank or there may be a D or S. (The letters 'JS' next to Roosevelt's neck are the designer's monogram and not a mint mark.)

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 03/2012:

Lower grades, any mint mark

Very worn condition - $3.68

Moderately worn - $3.91

Slightly worn - $4.03

Higher grades

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Almost no wear - $4.40

Uncirculated - $4.89 to $1380.00 depending on quality

"D" mint mark (Denver):

Almost no wear - $4.40

Uncirculated - $4.89 to $1560.00

"S" mint mark (San Francisco):

Almost no wear - $4.90

Uncirculated - $6.61 to $910.00

DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary due to market fluctuations. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.
