Either way, it was a common circulation coin before Germany switched to euros in 2002.

At the time of changeover, 2 pf was about 1 cent and 2 DM was about a dollar.

Regardless of whether it's a 2 pfennig or 2 mark coin, it's no longer worth anything other than as a curiosity. Germany adopted the euro as its currency in 2002.

At that time the mark was worth roughly 50 cents U.S. so your coin would be worth 1¢ if it's a 2 pf piece, or $2 if it's a 2 mark piece.

As of 12/2011, in average condition it would probably sell for about the same amount to a collector unless it has a "G" mint mark, which might add 50¢ to $1 to its price. A nice uncirculated one currently lists for about $3.00, again except for the "G" mint mark which might sell for around $4.50

Prior to adoption of the euro, German fractional coins were denominated in pfennige. Only British Coins were (and still are) denominated in pence.
