Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter above the DO in DOLLAR. It may be blank or there may be a CC, O or S. (The M on the front of the coin is the designer's monogram and not a mint mark.)

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 12/2011:

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Very worn condition - $32

Moderately worn - $33

Slightly worn - $33

Almost no wear - $36

Uncirculated - $50 to $20,630 depending on quality

"CC" mint mark (Carson City):

Very worn - $72

Moderately worn - $94

Slightly worn - $100

Almost no wear - $112

Uncirculated - $198 to $45,000

"O" mint mark (New Orleans):

Very worn - $32

Moderately worn - $33

Slightly worn - $33

Almost no wear - $36

Uncirculated - $50 to $58,130

"S" mint mark (San Francisco):

Very worn - $32

Moderately worn - $33

Slightly worn - $33

Almost no wear - $36

Uncirculated - $47 to $4,380

"O" mint mark cut over an "S"

Very worn - $32

Moderately worn - $39

Slightly worn - $40

Almost no wear - $77

Uncirculated - $234 to $37,500

DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary significantly due to changes in the precious metals market. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.

FAQ's about Morgan dollarsE Pluribus Unum

The motto E Pluribus Unum (Latin for "Out of Many, One") is on ALL $1 coins minted since 1878 so that's not specific enough to ID any one coin.

Silver Eagles

Silver eagles are bullion coins minted since 1986 for sale to collectors but not for spending. Morgan dollars were made for use in ordinary circulation just like dimes and quarters.

"E Pluribus Unum"

Note that ALL U.S. coins bear the motto "E Pluribus Unum" ("From many, one") so this is not a distinguishing characteristic of a coin. The denomination, date, mint mark, and condition are the most helpful characteristics to start with.

AnswerAugust 12, 2009

1882 is not a rare date for Morgan dollars. In circulated condition, it's worth about $16.

However, if it has a "CC" mintmark (on the back, above the "DO" in DOLLAR), this is a rarer date and will be worth about $75-100 in circulated condition.

Other mintmarks are common in lower grades, but scarcer in Mint State and the finest examples go up to $4000.

MS60- $36.00 MS63- $47.00 MS65- $425.00

What is the value of an 1882 Morgan silver dollar?

1882 silver dollar value $1 in 1882 according to inflation would now be worth $21.95 in 2009 Determining the base silver value- A Morgan silver dollar is 90% silver and with one of them being 26.73 grams that would mean there is only ~24 grams of silver or about 24/31 of an oz of silver. Depending on the value of silver at the time using the December 2009 value of $19 per oz, the coin's silver value would only be $14.70 (I guess the value of silver did not keep up with inflation!!) However, since it is a coin it has a bit more value than the silver price... it would also depend on where it was minted and the mint mark (San Francisco, Philadelphia, Carson City, or New Orleans), but it would also depend on the condition of the coin.
