The missing word "CENTS" isn't a minting error, but it was an error in judgement.
The people at the Mint thought that the new coin's size and color would be enough to identify it as a nickel. What they didn't expect was that crooks would plate the coins and pass them off as "new $5 gold piece designs", so later that year the design was modified to include the word CENTS
