Thermodynamics includes the study of ALL types of energy - or at least their effect on systems. In thermodynamics, the source of the energy is not so much the issue as the effect of the energy. Generally the key questions are how much work, how much heat, and how much internal energy. At the macroscopic level, it doesn't really matter if the energy came as solar, mechanical, wind, geothermal, or combustion - just whether it came in the form of work or heat. At the molecular and sub-atomic levels thermodynamics begins to consider vibrational, rotational and kinetic energy as components of the internal energy. At that level electron orbital energy levels and bonding energies become important as well.
