Trichomonas vaginalis is a single celled protozoa which causes the STD trichomoniasis. This is a very common sexually transmitted disease affecting both men and women, although symptoms are most common among women.
Symptoms for women include a frothy, greenish-white discharge with a foul odor, pain with intercourse, vaginal itching or irritation. For men, usually they are asymptomatic, but they may experience some burning with urination and penile discomfort.
Diagnosis is made by looking at a sample of the discharge on a slide under a microscope and seeing the protozoa swimming around.
Treatment is with an antibiotic, called metronidazole. It is a one time dose. Both partners must be treated, or they run the risk of re-infecting the treated partner. Both partners should abstain from sexual intercourse until their parter has been treated and is symptom free.
