a single replacement reaction is a reaction in which one element takes the place of another element in a compound.

In a single replacement reaction, or single displacement reaction, a single uncombined element replaces another in a compound. Two reactants yield two products. For example when zinc combines with hydrochloric acid, the zinc replaces hydrogen.

Replacement Reactions

A+BC=B+AC

For instance, if magnesium is dropped into a solution of Copper (II) Nitrate, the magnesium will react because it is more active (in other words wants to bond more than the copper does).

If by chance you drop Copper into Potassium Acetate, you will find that no reaction will occur.

Reactivity of Metals (from most reactive to least)

Lithium

Barium

Potassium

Calcium

Sodium

Magnesium

Aluminum

Zinc

Chromium

Iron

Nickel

Tin

Lead

Hydrogen

Copper

Mercury

Silver

Platinum

Gold

1. Alkali metals will always replace hydrogen in cold water

2. Magnesium to iron on the chart will always replace hydrogen in steam

3. Mercury doesn't react with much of anything

4. Metals higher than Hydrogen will always replace it in an acid (Nitric acid, drop zinc (II) in it, and you will recieve H2 + ZnCl2)

A single replacement reaction takes place between an element and a compound. The free element replaces on of the elements of the compound. This produces a new compound and a new free element.

e.g
A + BC ----> AC + B

A single replacement reaction is when there are two polyatomic ions bonded together, e.g. Copper Sulfate, has another chemical added, so there are three total ions on the right side of the equation. Now, if the lone ion is more reactive than the corresponding ion (the one with the same polarity of the charge that is attached to the ion, whether it be positive or negative), then a reaction occurs, and they "switch partners" and change which ion is paired.

To find out the products and the quantities of the products of this equation, you have to balance the charge so that the positive and negative ions that are paired together have the same charge. This is done by changing the subscript, which is discussed in another answer. Once this is done you can begin balancing the equation.

To balance the equation, you must make both sides of the equation equal by figuring out the quantities of each balanced pair. If there are four copper atoms on one side, the other side through the combination of quantity and subscripts must also equal four.

If you do not understand any part of this, look it up to understand this better.

The correct answers are: A single element replaces one of the elements in a compound. The element replaced must be less reactive than the one doing the replacing. The single element will join with an ion of opposite charge.

What is the name of the type of reaction that occurs when you have one element and one compound as the reactants and a new element and compound as a product?

Synthesis: A synthesis reaction is when two or more simple compounds combine to form a more complicated one. These reactions come in the general form of: A + B ---> AB One example of a synthesis reaction is the combination of iron and sulfur to form iron (II) sulfide: 8 Fe + S8 ---> 8 FeSThis is a single-replacement reaction. Example: Zn + Cu(NO3)2 ---> Cu + Zn(NO3)2 One caveat: the question says "new element" ... if this is what you really mean, only nuclear reactions can result in a change in the elements involved.Single displacement
