Best Answer

its because you are going up and pushing the performer out

<><><>

When actor A "upstages" actor B on stage, actor A goes behind (upstage) of B, forcing B to turn his back to the audience to speak in dialogue with A. This gives the upstage actor A a better position to face and address the audience and puts B in an awkward position. It can be amusing when actors get caught in an upstaging duel, each crossing upstage of the other until they both end up pinned against the upstage wall.

What is the definition of upstaging in drama?

It's when Actor A stands upstage of (behind) Actor B, forcing Actor B to turn his back to the audience, thus automatically shifting the audience's attention more toward Actor A. It's usually a bad thing to do, unless the script or your director tells you to do so.

How accepting would a mother of the bride outfit be if it consisted of a short skirt and a long jacket?

There is a lot of flexibility in terms of what the mother of the bride can wear to her daughter's wedding. The mother should take into account the bride's wishes and try to accommodate them while also making sure she feels good in the dress she has chosen. A short skirt (or strapless gown, for that matter) is generally not preferred as anything too sexy risks upstaging the bride. However, the bride may be OK with it, so it's best to just ask. The overall goal is to complement and make the bride look good.

Is it proper for the mother dress to cost more than the bride dress?

The value of the dresses will be a thing of concern only to the two women involved. No one else will be pondering it, unless some very large extremes are gone to. As to the propriety of it, there is nothing wrong with the mother dressing in her best, so long as the dress does not obviously outshine the bride, or otherwise draw attention from her. It is "the Bride's day", after all. On the other hand, mothers are as mothers are, and informally speaking, many weddings have become the "mother's day". This is where the mother - no doubt upset about her own mother upstaging her wedding in the past - chooses to pass on the favor to her daughter. The daughter may then do the same to her daughter. Frankly, this is not polite or appropriate, and the cycle should be broken.

What does upstage mean?

There are two meanings of the word. Early stages were tilted a little to give everyone a better view, before some bright mind got the idea to tilt the house instead. The side furthest from the audience was a little higher. That's why the front of the stage is "downstage" and the back of the stage is "upstage." The other use of the word refers to some action on the stage stealing the focus from another actor. This term literally derives from one actor "upstaging" another, that is, being upstage from them. The upstage actor can naturally face the audience while speaking to the downstage actor; the downstage actor must either reply without facing the upstage actor (which usually looks unnatural) or turn his back to the audience (a weaker position, since the audience can no longer see his face).
