However, in the mid-1940s, we learned that the Vice President must be more involved with more of the day-to-day activities within the Oval Office. When FDR died, his VP, Harry Truman, had nearly no idea what plans and policies were in place to win World War II, including the development of the atomic bomb.
Over the administrations since, the role of the two executive positions have evolved to more like a partnership, to the point, some would argue, the roles were somewhat temporarily reversed after 9/11.
