Viscosity is a measure of the resistance of a fluid which is being deformed by either shear stress or extensional stress. In general terms it is the resistance of a liquid to flow, or its "thickness".

The viscosity of a substance is a measure of its consistency. Viscosity is defined as the ability of a substance to resist flow. In a sense, viscosity is the inverse of fluidity. Cold molasses, for example, has a higher viscosity than water because it is less fluid. A magma's viscosity is largely controlled by its temperature, composition, and gas content

Viscosity is the measure of a fluid's resistance to flow. High viscosity describes a very slow moving fluid such as molases which pours very slowly. The viscosity of the liquid inside a volcano most likely has a very high viscousity because you don't usually see lava zipping down the side of a volcano, it pours very slowly.

Viscosity is referring to how thick/dense a liquid is. For example, maple syrup would have much more resistance (viscosity) than say, water or juice because it's thicker in consistancy.

The viscosity of lava changes as it cools. Much like pouring molten steel from a crucible at a steelmill, the lava is more viscose at higher temperatures and as it cools becomes solid.

What is lava called with high viscosity?

Lava with high viscosity is called slica-rich lava

How does the silica content of lava impact its viscosity?

Silica content is directly proportional to viscosity, so the higher the silica content of a lava, the higher its viscosity. high viscosity means a lava will be thick and slow moving, hence probably meaning an explosive eruption. lava's with a high viscosity include rhyolite and andesite whereas lava's with a low viscosity (runny ones) include basalt.

Does High viscosity lava flows faster than low viscosity lava?

No. Viscosity is a liquid's resistance to flow. So higher viscosity means a slower flow.

Is pyroclastic material likely to form from low-viscosity or high-viscosity lava?

low viscosity lava due to the violent eruption of the volcano

What kind of viscosity lava does Mount Tambora have?

High viscosity.

How does the viscosity affect of lava affect its flow rate?

Viscosity means how runny it is. Thus a lava with low viscosity will erupt fast and form long, wide spreading lava flows (eg Hawaii) and lavas of high viscosity will erupt slowly and form lava domes (eg Mt. St. Helens).

Does Krakatoa make pillow lava?

No. Pillow lava is basaltic, low-viscosity lava. Krakatoa is a stratovolcano with a style of ereuption more characteristic of high-viscosity andesitic lava.

How would you describe lava with a high viscosity?

The highest viscosity lava is rhyolite. Rhyolitic lava tends to form dome-shaped volcanoes and tends to cause explosive eruptions.

What is lava's resistance to flow?

Viscosity.

What happens when the temperature-of lava increases?

When the temperature of lava increases, its viscosity will decrease. Viscosity is a measure of the magnitude of internal friction of a substance.
