If you computer has volitile memory, the RAM gets erased every time you turn off your computer. If it had non-volitile memory, it would save information in it. You can get similar effects by 'hybernating' your computer rather than shutting it down completely. It keeps about 10 watts of electricity going to the memory to save the info. Traditionally, devices such as PDA's primarily use non-volitile, while PC's use volitle. New developments in quantum spintronics may make non-volitile memory standard in home computers and laptops fairly soon.

Non volatile retains its information even if the power is disconnected. ..Volatile loses the stored information/settings if power is lost.

Think of it this way...if you remove the battery in your car you may lose the radio station settings and will have to reset the radio stations. That is an example of volatile memory.

Non Volatile does not require a maintained power supply.

Whatever information is stored in RAM (random access memory) is lost when the computer is turned off, because RAM chips need a continuous supply of electrical power to hold data or software stored in them. this kind of memory is called volatile because it is temporary in nature. By contrast another kind of memory holds data permanently, even when the power is turned off. this kind of memory is nonvolatile and is called ROM

( read-only memory).

Volatile memory is erased when the power flow to the memory stops. This is the sort of memory your computer uses. When the computer is shut down, the memory is deleted. RAM is the most common example for this type of memory. Nonvolatile memory is not erased when the power flow stops. Flash drives, hard drives, CDs, etc.

volatile means when there is a power failure,the data that you have stored in RAM is deleted if it has not been saved. whereas non-volatile means that when you have saved the data,it is permanently saved.it cannot be deleted unless you have deleted it.
