There is something funky with the ignition lock (security feature) on the Saturn. I've had mine replaced twice, and have also had service calls and had to have a lock smith work on it to get it where it would turn. [One of the lock smiths suggested that I LIGHTLY tap the key with a hammer, which has actually worked for me. I keep a small hammer in the dash.] I've never noticed any time that I could not put the Saturn in neutral. [Although I never tried to do that when I could not turn the key in the ignition, if you are talking about this happening simultaneously.] I have a 2001 Saturn s series and only have my 2 spare keys. I was having problems turning the key in the ignition also and tried jiggling the steering wheel a bunch. I tried hitting it lightly with a hammer and it worked. However, the next time I went to start it it took a couple of turns to get the key to turn in the ignition again. Gonna bring it to the shop soon to find out what's going on but it seems like the hammer thing is a good quick fix. I have had the same problem. Tapped with hammer and the tumblers fell into place. Then use grafite to lubricate the lock. Fixed problem. i have a 1994 sl2 when the key is turned to off i have to remove the key and reinsert it to make it work again has been like that for years
If you're saying the starter won't engage occaisonally, try moving the shifter lever between park and neutral, then back to park. If that makes it start, you probably have a neutral lockout switch that is adjusted wrong.
Some Saturns have a problem with their ignition system. It just freezes up for no reason. You have to replace the ignition cylinder, and probably the ignition switch, too. I have an '06 Ion that just did that a couple weeks ago. I took it to a mechanic, and he had to call Saturn to find out what was wrong with it. They told him to replace the whole steering wheel column, but I found out later that I probably could have just done the ignition switch and cylinder. You have to buy the parts from Saturn, and get the ignition cylinder keyed by a locskmith.

For now, neither. You need to do a little more investigating to find out what's actually wrong before you throw parts at a problem. It COULD be the starter, neutral safety switch, wiring, loose connection... or the keyswitch.
The neutral safety switch could be bad or the ignition switch is bad .
if you meen NO LIGHT in the instrument pannel just check the battery, might be really dead
use small Allen key in access hole while turning and pulling clockwise
You undougetly did somethig wrong. Try adjusting the switch first.
It may require Dexron 3 or it may require a special Saturn fluid. Look in your owner's manual. If you do not have one call your local Saturn dealer. Using the wrong fluid can damage the transmission, so as I am not 100% sure, I cannot be positive.
Either the neutral lockout switch, an electrical connection or the keyswitch. If it's a stickshift it could be the clutch pedal lockout switch.
Are the lights in the dash coming on, and it just won't crank or are there no lights at all? If the lights are coming on you need an ignition switch.
Wrong key?
