I would start by looking for worn vacum line to modulator. Or the modulator could be bad. the modulator is located on the transmission which tells the transmission to shift when the vacum pulls a diaphragm inside the modulator a certain distance. some are adjustable with a flat blade screw i believe.

check your battery cables. could be old or just loose.

Your u-joints are worn out.
the shift siliniod for AOD transmission is bad. it cost about 30 bucks and is usually special order
The shift solenoid on a 1998 F150 is on the fender well. It is mounted with bolts and requires a socket set to be removed.
Ford Dealer can help you. And tell you if there is anything wrong with your 2003 F150.

starter solinoid (pass side fender round thing that batt cable goes to) is stuck. costs about 10 bucks good luck.
The transmission may shift hard due to it beginning to fail. However, it may also be due to low transmission fluid.
