Its unlikely that it is related to getting a new battery. Make sure that during the process of replacing the battery that any emissions hoses or wiring were not disturbed or disconnected.
I had this exact problem on my 1996 Taurus. The solution in my case was to replace the transmission range sensor. I replaced it myself. It was easy to change. On the 1996 Taurus it is located in the CCRM which is not serviceable you will need a new one from the auto parts store or from a junk yard. They average 150 at auto zone. The ccrm is right next to the battery its a little box that plugs in.
It might have some other problems on the motor or any other place in the car.

Have you checked your fuses? this is the most likely easy fix for this problem.. Unhooking the battery should not have done anything to the radio. You either have a fuse issue, or a bad radio.
