If the transmission is in neutral and the engine is racing would indicate that your throttle body cable is binding somewhere. Check the assembly, check by the gas pedal. I have checked with a dealer on the same problem. I have a 96 sc2 and it does the same thing. They told me it idles down due to the engine computer. They said if it is cold outside it will idle high like this. Once it started getting warm outside mine stopped doing this. Please let me know if you have found out anything. -insaneman2@hotmail.com Mine was doing the same thing. I changed the temp sensor and it worked. yours is probably cracked.
a major part of an automatic transmission... A torque converter is what couples the engine to the transmission. It acts a little bit like a clutch and allow the engine to drive the transmission. At slow engine speeds, like at idle, it slips so the engine will not stall while the transmission is in gear. As engine speed (RPM) increases it allows the engine to drive the transmission. This is just the basic idea of what a torque converter does.
Four speeds on your transmission and the overdrive is when the engine speed and the transmission speed are engaged is a interchangeable load. running "free" sort of
pushing slowly around a parking lot or repair shop lot...no. towing ..always tow with drive wheels off the ground. "coasting"...placing transmission in neutral at highway speeds and coasting downhill, for example, very bad for transmission and also illegal in most jurisdictions. Reason: lubrication of internal components is considerably reduced and results in abnormal wear and early transmission failure. Coasting is classified as not having the vehicle under proper control because of the lack of engine braking capability, and also not being able to accelerate immediately if such action is required. Hope this clarifies the issue.
You need to service the transmission. Have the fluid/filter changed. If that does not help, seek professional help.
It is called a 42rh if it has overdrive, three speeds would be a 32rh
A loud knocking noise in the motor of a car at high speeds is most likely the engine. There could be another issue with the transmission if the knocking only happens at high speeds.
4 speed. There are three speeds in which the transmission permits more slippage between the engine flywheel and the torque converter. The OD, or "overdrive" gear is a fourth gear that creates a direct mechanical connection between the transmission and engine. This creates a higher gear ratio that improves gas mileage.
Does the speedometer work? Sounds like the electrical connector from the transmission to the PCM is either not plugged in correctly or at all.
The reason is that when you shift to neutral, the engine is released from the drive, and so there is no longer a load on the motor and it momentarily speeds up. I don't know who taught you to drive, they didn't do a good job. You should NEVER PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION!!!!!!!!
With the engine running place the transmission in the neutral ( N ) position. Gently press the accelerator ( gas ) pedal to increase RPM. If the squeal is heard it is most likely a belt or pulley on the engine. If it only occurs while driving then it is most likely a wheel bearing.
D=Drive, R=reverse, N=Neutral, 3, 2, & 1, are the speeds, or gears,of the transmission. So if there is a problem it is with the transmission.
Not running on all cylinders? Bad harmonic balancer?
