It was a sea and air battle - the first to take place between carriers and planes on both sides. It came about because of the fantastic work of the US cryptographers who could read just enough of the Japanese war code to be able to tell where they were headed for a sneak attack. The US forces surprised the Japanese forces, and sunk many ships, including 4 aircraft carriers, and shot down hundreds of Japanese warplanes.
