The carpenter bee is a large black bee that resembles a bumblebee but is less hairy. The males are stingless. The females, however, can sting but don't tend to be very aggressive.

The term black box is more to do with the type of flower the bees are natured on, flowers from the trees of Eucalyptus largiflorens aka Black Box Gum.
