You don't need to use a Honda brand coolant. You just need to know what type of coolant your vehicle requires. Regular coolant (green) and dexcool(orange) Do not mix these two up! When you look at the coolant reservoir it should tell you what type it needs, if not there look in the owners manual or if all else fails just peer inside the reservoir or radiator cap(make sure the car is not hot or you might just have a face full of hot coolant) to see what color it is. to make it easier, they make a coolant, which is compatible with any color coolant.
You can use the standard coolant (green in color). 50/50 mix pre-diluted should be fine. Honda does have their own brand of coolant if you wish to go that route. If you dilute the coolant yourself make sure you use distilled water to avoid deposits.
If coolant needs to be added and the owner does not know what kind is already in the engine, it should be drained and flushed before adding any new. Most coolants are appropriate, but it is not recommended to mix brands or types. Use a coolant safe for aluminum blocks or buy Yamaha brand coolant specifically for your model. The coolant should be premixed 50/50 or if it is not premixed, mix it 60% coolant and 40% water before adding.

1990 was before GM switched to using Dex-Cool extended life coolant, so any of the traditional green ethylene glycol or universal coolant/antifreezes would work perfectly. Any brand will suit the car well.
Standard recommendation concerning coolant for the Discovery are mid to high end brands. Regardless of brand selected it must be replaced every two years for maximum effectiveness.
