You ought to see your regular physician/PA/NP first and let them determine if you need to see a specialist. What they will do is examine you and get the right lab tests, Xrays/MRI/CT scan, etc to see if you really do need to see a specialist. It would be a shame for you to go to an internal medicine doctor, then find out you should have gone to a surgeon or cancer doctor.

Although not a qualified medical professional i feel I am able to answer this question. If you find a lump in the back of your neck you should do exactly the same as you do if you find a lump anywhere else on your body and that is go as soon as possible, preferably immediately to see your GP. No matter how small NEVER leave a lump anywhere on your body ALWAYS let a qualified professional look and tell you it is okay to leave. If a choice arises to leave or have it removed, if possible i think it always preferable to have it removed then you know it is gone, but this is secondary just remember find a lump, go to your doctor. If you have found a lump go NOW and make the appointment, if they are shut phone as soon as they open NEVER LEAVE A LUMP!! Adam good answer

The word lump is a very general, undescriptive word. With such a lack of description, one cannot give you a definite answer. If you want a proper opinion, then get a proper examination...in person with a professional.

I knew an old lady(94 yrs old) who has now passed away of old age, that had that exactly but it caused her pain, was always there since a fall that caused an injury that caused calcium to grow called a bone spurr. You could go have it checked just in case thAT IS NOT IT. It very well COULD be a tumor(cancerous or beneign) or a ganglean cyst(full of fluid that,my mom says "if you smack it hard enough they burst and dissolve. But if they hurt they are usually a calcium thing")

For a small painful lump on your neck, start with your primary care provider. The history, physical, and any testing you get there will help narrow the possibilities so you can choose the right specialist, if needed.

Doctors who treat skin problems are called "dermatologists". That's probably what you're referring to.
