The economy was somewhat based on farming. Pennsylvania exported flour and grain. They also were known for the textile industry, sawmills, and gristmills.

In the region, there was a huge forest stretching from Delaware to Ohio and underneath it was rich soil so the lumbering industry was big because they had to cut down trees to make farms. So then they would sell the extra wood to other colonies or ship it to England.

Pennsylvania's fertile lands, numerous streams, woodlands, and access to the ocean made the colony's economy extremely successful. The settlers farmed corn, rye, and wheat for food exportation. In addition, flax and hemp farms advanced Pennsylvania's textile industry. Furthermore, an abundance of lumber in conjunction with waterways made a lucrative shipbuilding business for the colony. While the south dominated tobacco trade, Philadelphia's harbor enabled Pennsylvania Colony to invest in international exportation of iron and paper.
