All pharmacists are required to earn a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and also pass two exams to obtain a license to practice as a pharmacist. Coursework in pharmacy includes intensive study of chemistry, Biology and anatomy, as well as pharmacology and medical ethics. Typically, applicants to a doctoral program have already completed a bachelor's degree in a related field of study, such as chemistry.

To become a pharmacist, a person is usually required to have two years of undergraduate coursework as well as four years of pharmacy school. Although not required, majoring in subjects such as chemistry, biology, calculus, or physics is a big help for future pharmacy classes. After pharmacy school, a pharmacist may work through residencies for one to two years to obtain hands on skill in their profession. In order to be a pharmacist, a person will eventually have to pass the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination issued by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.
