technically no, but many people would choose a more qualified individual over a non-qualified individual. the reason you don't NEED to be qualified is because you can help anyone with interior design if you want to and they're willing to accept your help.

There is no specific education requirement to become an interior designer, however, there are a number of private institutions which offer certifications in interior design. These certifications are designed to allow a person to obtain a certain level of mastery voluntarily. Additionally, certain types of education may be helpful, such as architecture based classes; art classes focusing on furniture design; and painting classes.

In order to go into an interior design school, you don't need any work experience. In order to start your own interior design business, you don't necessarily have to have work experience either, but you definitely need to have ways to attract customers, and experience with designing things and having a portfolio can help a lot. People aren't going to trust you with their homes until they see that your style is, or can be, compatible with theirs. So, practice at school or at work would help a lot.
