What kind of government did the US have in 1850?

The form of government in the US has been the same since the signing of the constitution (1780?) as far as having the president, congress and supreme court. Of course, there have been amendments (ie the Bill of Rights), new laws and changes in interpretation by the supreme court but the basic democracy remains.
