brian and his father built his guitar in the 60's mainly from an old oak fireplace. It is known as the 'red special' or 'fireplace' and has been used on pretty much every Queen recording apart from 'Crazy little thing called love' (where he used a Fender Telecaster), 'Innuendo' (a funny looking skull guitar) and 'Princes of the Universe' (where he used a Gibson flying V).

The only things that were brought for the guitar was the pick ups which are made by Burns. There are commercial models of the guitar. Check out Brian May Guitars where they can be bought in a variety of colours :) (i have one personally)

Who made Brian may's 'red special'?

Brian built his guitar himself with the help of his father, Harold. They built it in the early 1960's out of materials such as an old unwanted fireplace, and motor cycle springs. The company Guild is one of a few companys that later on made replica's of the guitar, which Brian sometimes uses when performing. Also the company Brian May Guitars makes the red special in a variety of colours and also an acoustic version (known as the Rhapsody) and a red-special bass guitar. I personally have a Brian May Guitar in antique cherry. :) Hope this helps.
