Metronidazole is also known as Flagyl, its brand name. It is an antibiotic that kills anaerobic bacteria and parasites. Anaerobic bacteria are single-celled, living organisms that live in environments in which there is not much oxygen and can cause disease or abcess in the abdomen, liver, and pelvis. It can also affect the ovaries and the fallopian tubes. For example, Flagyl (metronidazole) is commonly used to for patients having "c-diff", Clostridium Difficile Colitis.
