The United Kingdom, like the rest of the European Union, has switched to the Euro as standard currency. Before the Euro, the monetary unit was the pound.

Not true! the UK has NEVER used the Euro. The currency of the UK is the Pound Sterling (GBP) (£).

The UK currency is the 'Pound Sterling', also commonly referred to as "the pound". The acronym for the currency is 'GBP'.

One pound (£) is equal to one hundred pence (p). The plural for a penny is 'pence' if you are talking about a sum or 'pennies' if you are talking about the individual coins.

Paper Notes

There are currently four denominations of pound-notes available as legal tender in the UK

  • £50 - large and red/purple in appearance
  • £20 - purple/blue in appearance
  • £10 - orange/brown in appearance
  • £5 - green in appearance

Coins

  • £2 - the largest of the coins. Gold in appearance with a silver centre.
  • £1 - the fourth smallest coin (fifth largest), round and gold in appearance
  • 50p - the seventh smallest (second largest) coin, a seven sided silver coloured coin
  • 20p - the third smallest coin (sixth largest), seven sided and silver in colour
  • 10p - the fifth smallest coin (fourth largest), round and silver
  • 5p - the smallest coin, round and silver in colour
  • 2p - the sixth smallest (third largest) coin, round and copper in colour
  • 1p - the second smallest coin (seventh largest), round and copper in colour

The Bank of England, the Bank or Scotland and the Bank of Northern Ireland all issue UK legal tender in the above denominations.
