Le service Militaire or Service National (conscription) had been compulsory until 1996 when Jacques Chirac decided to professionalize the Army.

It had been created after the French revolution. Just before its end, young men had to spend 12 months in the army or 24 months in public administration for the conscientious objectors.

Now, it had been "replaced" by the "journée civique" (civic day).
