  • You can buy over-the-counter painkillers for dogs, especially made for dogs. Search internet sites specifically offering dog supplies. If you don't know what's wrong with your pet, you shouldn't be medicating indiscriminately. Example...a one pound pigeon can be put to sleep permanently (and very painfully) if given a Bayer aspirin.
  • Do not self medicate your pets! You wouldn't hopefully do that to a child! Veterinarians are there for a purpose and they will have to examine your dog to make a diagnosis and they will tell you what medications you should give them. If you find the medications from the vets too expensive (and often they are) and you really can't afford it, get the prescription and have it filled at your local pharmacy (often less expensive). Be sure to tell the pharmacist that it is for your dog and also the weight of the dog and they'll do the rest and give you instructions with the medications. If you can't afford a vet find one and offer to work off your bill. They often need someone to clean out the cages or take the dogs "in hospital" for short outings of fresh air. See your vet as soon as possible! If your dog is old or has a very painful disease it's time to discuss with the vet what quality of life your dog is going to have and then it's a decision you will have to make from there. Don't let your "friend" suffer needlessly.
  • At the vet I have been given Metacam its a liquid, and have used Rimadyl, I prefer the Metacam as it does not damage the stomach as much, Rimady and a drug called Baytril (which I think is for an infection) usually upsets stomach and the vet may tell you to give a little Tagemet, but only under vet's care and advise. I got this from a vet website: http://www.vetinfo.com/daspirin.html
  • Aspirin has the same problems in dogs that it has in people. It can cause gastrointestinal upsets and ulcers if the GI signs are ignored. It can cause renal failure if overdosed. It causes an increase in clotting time. This usually isn't a serious side effect but it does occur. Despite these shortcomings it has a lot of beneficial effects and it is inexpensive. The currently recommended dosage of aspirin varies a little from publication to publication but it is between 5 and 15mg/lb every 12 hours. Since there is a range I usually pick the middle of it and go for about 10mg/lb every 12 hours. This works well and seems to be pretty safe. That works out to an aspirin tablet per 32 pounds of body weight twice a day. I have to admit that I rarely advise giving more than 2 aspirin twice a day despite the fact that some big dogs could obviously take more based on the per pound calculation.

Ask your vet for RX for generic Meloxicam tablets 7.5 mg, you would break this in 1/2 or 1/4's depending on weight of dog. Cost is $ 4.00, the name brand for pets is Metacam which is a liquid and cost $ 90.00 a bottle

2nd Answer:

Do not give your dog tylenol. Only give a buffered aspirin. That is safe for your dog. But you need to find out what is causing the pain. I highly recommend you take your dog in to see your Veterinarian and have the dog checked out. The Vet can then recommend what is best to give the dog. Do not try to cure the dog at home or give it human medications.

1st Answer:

You can give your dog tylenol, no other strong pain medication.

small doses of aspirin may be given, or ultram, which I just found out from my vet may also be used as well, but you should consult with your veterinarian as to dose for your pets weight and age for safety reasons.

Please get your dog to a vet. I know this may be expensive, but if your dog is obviously in pain, the cause and extent of the pain may not be be at all obvious to you.

Will taking enough painkillers give you a heart attack?

Your question doesn't give enough information and can not be answered. Another Answer Painkillers can, in fact, cause your heart to stop beating/heart attack. If you take too many painkillers, if you take other medications that can interact with painkillers, if you already have a heart condition and take certain painkillers, yes...it can cause a heart attack. You should never take prescription painkillers that are not prescribed to you by your physician and it's always best to have your prescriptions filled at the same pharmacy. That way, the pharmacist can catch any dangerous interactions that might occur between prescriptions. In addition, if you already have a heart condition and you are taking any kind of heart medication, it is very important to clear with your physician (get the okay) to take any kind of painkillers including over the counter painkillers like Tylenol, Advil, Motrin, etc.
