When painting outdoor cement, it is imperative that you use a product specifically made for cement or the paint will peel and chip within a short period of time. I have had great success with H&C Acrylic Concrete Stain. It comes in many colors and can be purchased at most hardware, paint or home improvement stores. It is very important, however, that you prepare the cement properly before staining. If you are staining an object such as a statue or flower pot, you should wash it first with a detergent solution and rinse thoroughly. It must be completely dry before staining. If you are staining a flat concrete surface such as a porch or patio, you must "etch" the concrete before staining. Etching means washing the concrete with muriatic acid. Muriatic acid is also available at most hardware and home improvement stores. Just follow the directions on the container. I used a wide broom to scrub the concrete with the acid and it worked great. Then, you must rinse thoroughly - a power washer is best, but a regular hose will work. Once the concrete is completely dry, you may begin staining. The stain is about the same thickness and consistency as paint, and it can be applied with brushes or rollers.

New, unfinished outdoor furniture may be treated in a number of ways, a good quality exterior stain, a plain oil finish (teak oil is always good) or you may paint it.

More and more we see a move away from oil-based paints, and although I understand the trend I still think exterior oil paint is your best choice fro this application. Read your instructions FIRST, then follow them. You will get a good, long lasting result.

If you prefer to to work with Latex paint, then use an exterior grade and read your instructions. You may need to put two coats on to get a good finish and if so you should sand lightly between coats and use a tack-cloth to remove the sanding dust.

If you are painting a piece of furniture that is a bit older, has been painted before, or has been left untreated for some time, then you will have to do quite a bit of prep work to make it ready for the top coat. Sanding, repairing, and priming are all posiblities, depending on the current state of the piece.

I know this sounds like a lot of work, but over the years I have found if you do something right the first time, you have a finished product that will last a long time without having to redo it repeatedly.

I assume you mean something concrete like a water fountain or statuary. You need "masonry waterproofing" paint. it is DESIGNED to live underwater. An example is UGL masonry waterproof paint. You can read about it on the UGL webpage. You can order on ACE hardware online site. I prefer the light grey, beautiful color!--d dies, MD

There are several excellent brands of exterior latex on the market, but do not be tempted by the "bargain brands" - they're no bargain. Flat is the usual gloss level for exterior, but eggshell works well, too. Shutters and trim work well with Satin or Semi-gloss.

If it's never been painted and chlorinated rubber or epoxy pool paints are available in your area, that would be ideal. If not, water based pool paints are available but you'll want to ensure that proper prep, including removing all loose, peeling or flaking paint and sanding then priming if required. Check with the pool paint manufacturer. Many are designed to go directly over fiberglass or plastics.

It would depend on what they are made out of. If they are stone figurines, you can use concrete paint. If they are wood, they would have to be primed with an exterior primer and then painted with exterior paint. (There are many different kinds of exterior paint to choose from.) If they are ceramic, they would have to be primed with a specialty primer like Zinsser's bulls eye 123 and then painted with almost any choice of exterior paint.

Use a 100% Acrylic primer and paint on outdoor wood surfaces. In addition to having higher UV resistance than an oil based paint it also will withstand freeze/thaw cycles better than an oil based paint.

What kind of paint should I use on a wooden outdoor table?

First of you are going to want to sand down the wood, this gets off all of the previous paint and readies the surface for a new coat. You can choose to stain it with any color of stain or you can use an exterior paint.

What kind of paint should I use on my outdoor table to protect it from the weather?

With all due repect to previous answer, that's overkill. Two coats of interior satin or semi-gloss is sufficient. Satin at minimum because the shimmer allows for easy cleanup which is important in the kitchen. Don't spend too much on the paint, no matter what anyone says, their all about the same. You should definitely start with an outdoor paint, or an indoor/outdoor paint. Then make sure to use a water sealer on top and allow it to dry fully before it is exposed to the elements.

You should never burn wood with paint on it unless you know, specifically, what kind of paint it is, that the paint is question is safe to burn, and that there is no other chemical treatment on the wood. There is such a thing as paint that is safe to burn, but you should never assume a given paint is safe. In particular, you should avoid burning wood with lead based paint on it, and much of the old paint was lead based.
