In a typical synagogue, you will find: An ark, which is a chest or cupboard, usually on the eastern wall of the synagogue, used to store the congregation's Torah scrolls. You will find a reading table where you can unroll enough of a Torah scroll to read. When not in use, each Torah scroll will be dressed in a mantle, usually ornately embroidered, and wearing a breastplate and crown. To read the Torah, the reader uses a yad, a pointer, to avoid touching the text. Over the ark, there is typcally an eternal light. There will also typically be one or more memorial plaques giving the names and dates of death of members of the congregation. Somewhere in the sanctuary, you will find many copies of the siddur (prayerbook) and there will also be copies of the machzor (high-holy day prayerbook). A rack of prayer shawls is commonly found at the back of the room or in the foyer. Another common feature is a pushke (Yiddish) or tzedakah box (Hebrew) where people can put donations when visiting on weekdays.
