Slaves were known mainly as working in the fields. But it wasnt until cotton became popular (1800's) that they began that. They were often used to cook for their masters, complete house work, feed animals on the farm, keep land clean, hunt for food, gather fire wood. Mainly anything that there master wanted them to do

In the U.S. slaves lives were very poor, they were mistreated by their owners. Some would be kind and actually treat there slaves kindly, but most would beat them, and make them work long hours.
