The word Junk comes from the name Junkers, a German aircraft manufacture. Before ww2 Junk yards were called salvage yards or wreck yards. Junkers were less sought out after at the end of the war by the allies for transport back to their respective countries, for study because of their common features.(Messershmidt and Folk wolf is what they were looking for) Hence "hey sargent!!! what kind of wrecked aircraft is that?? a me 109? no!!! its one of them junks....

The origin of the word is not certain. There is an old nautical expression that relates junk to 'old refuse from boats and ships'
