The government law calling for surveying of land in the Northwest Territory was the Land Ordinance of 1785.
Different groups claim rights to settle in the land of the northwest territory because they won the war.
The Northeast Ordinance of 1787 allowed for the creation of the Northwest Territory. Slavery in the Northwest Territory was forbidden, and a new border line used Ohio to divide between free and slave states. This separation of land began a national competition between the North and the South.
because the american settlers took the native americans land and the native americans where defending there home which they have lived at for over 30,000 years

As the Northwest Territories originally were the Rupert's land of the Hudson's Bay company, the early settlers were British traders, with the aborigial people already living in the area. Soon provinces were cut out of the land, and we have what is left of Northwest Territories.
