James Prescott Joule (December 24, 1818- October 11, 1889) established that the various forms of energy are basically the same and can be changed into one another. His ideas formed the basis for the first law of thermodynamics, the conservation of energy.
James Joule is important in physics for his great contributions in thermodynamics and electricity. He established units of measuring the amount of heat in a system which h is known as a joule.
James Prescott Joule FRS (pronounced /ˈdʒuːl/;[1] 24 December 1818 - 11 October 1889) was an English physicist and brewer, born in Salford, Lancashire. Joule studied the nature of heat, and discovered its relationship to mechanical work (see energy). This led to the theory of conservation of energy, which led to the development of the first law of thermodynamics. The SI derived unit of energy, the joule, is named after him. He worked with Lord Kelvin to develop the absolute scale of temperature, made observations on magnetostriction, and found the relationship between the current through a resistance and the heat dissipated, now called Joule's law.

without him we wouldn't know anything about gases and the paddle - wheel experiment in 1845. he built a electro - magnetic engine in 1838

If you're asking why it's called a joule, it's named after the scientist James Prescott Joule.
