Yes, Spain once ruled Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. The Spanish-American War in 1898 ended Spain's control of all three territories. Cuba became independent (after a few years) and Puerto Rico and the Philippines became US possessions. Puerot Rico is still a US territory, although now self-governing, and the Philippines gained independence from the US in 1946.
