There were many problems with King George and the English government brought about by the fact that the British needed money and treated colonies as subservient sources of revenue. The American colonies rebelled and Britain sent an army over to quell the rebellion. They came first to Boston and demanded quarters in the homes there. That was too much for most Americans. They raised an army and the war began.
It was important because if they didn't have unity they would not of won the revolutionary war.
They probably realised that the British Army was bigger than each of the colonies armies and that they had the same enemy.
